Thanks again Dierdre, Justin Trudeau got my vote in 2015 when he promised it would be the last time I would see a first past the post federal election, and lost it when he refused to exercise the leadership position he'd been given to deliver on that promise.

I’ve heard that from so many people. It’s really too bad he didn’t push it through. Though I’ve heard it leads to difficult outcomes (more coalitions, rise in far far right) I like the idea of forcing them to work together.

But here we are with a two party race, with the NDP and the PQ being decimated to ensure the CPC doesn't win. Without proportional representation of some kind we're going to end up with a political system like the the US where there's only partisanship and us vs them.

It’s unfortunate that, with a majority, Carney may be advised against a unity government but I really wish he would do it. We need change, and we need to build, and we should have every party at that table. With a majority, he doesn’t have to, but it would be great if he did anyway.

Just a quick note regarding one statement in your otherwise great post. "Decriminalization of abortion (1988) was completed under Brian Mulroney’s Progressive Conservatives." Actually Mulroney tried to bring back criminal charges for abortions - it died because of a tie in the Senate.

Specifically in "1990: The federal government, led by Progressive Conservative Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, introduces Bill C-43, which would sentence doctors to two years in jail for performing abortions where a woman's health is not at risk. The bill is passed by the House of Commons, but dies in the Senate after a tie vote." (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/abortion-rights-significant-moments-in-canadian-history-1.787212)

So Mulroney was not in fact responsible for the decriminalization of abortion. It was kept decriminalized despite his efforts to do otherwise.

It's so true that fear is a stronger emotion than hope, when it comes to politics.

I have read newspaper reports twice about brain studies in which conservatives have larger amygdalas than non-conservatives, the oldest reptile part of our brains that control fear. This supports your thinking.

I’m hopeful for the Country with Mark Carney leading. I am worried about Alberta’s future led by Danielle Smith and the far right agenda. I think he will try to create a respectful relationship with us but I have no doubt it will be rebuffed by her majesty, the neophyte Trump.
