Hi Deidre. Well stated as always. As for your other reader's query it is my understanding that exported goods are sold at our normal prices and importer pays the tariff. Ultimately it is a tax on the American consumer.
Of course our exports will drop as consumers will not pay the jacked pricing. If we raise the price beforehand that compounds the problem, the tariff added to our raised price.
My belief is that tRump is solely a vindictive ahole who when he feels attacked he goes into revenge. Obama humiliated him at a press dinner. That meant war. Trudeau and other leaders humiliated him at a G7, I believe. Trudeau ended up on the shit list.
There is no rational reasoning behind his behavior. He is mentally ill.
I know tariffs are *usually* paid by the importer, but Trump seems to want exporters to pay to sell their wares; almost like a fee for a table to sell merch at a convention, or stuff at a farmer’s market. Because he definitely thinks countries will pay into his ERS (external revenue service). Even if importers have to raise their prices to bring in Canadian goods, it still helps some of the other possible reasons he’s doing it; American goods will be less expensive, it still encourages production/manufacturing in America, and it still hurts us. But it won’t work entirely like normal tariffs in his plan.
I see your reasoning. There are products like uranium and potash and many minerals that they either don't have or don't enough of. Add to that the total integration of the automobile industry. They want made in America cars? The cost will explode if automakers have to amortize the cost of the billions they would need to spend on new plants and the higher wages they would have to pay (plus the cost of health insurance!)
Of course in the coming age worker's rights will get slaughtered.
Yeah — it doesn’t make a lot of sense for American consumers but that’s exactly why I don’t think it’s *meant to*. And I worry more about the annexation thing.
The annexation thing is a little worrisome. It could be like his wall bs, or just another bold yet empty threat to get us to fold. He has such a long history of baffling with bs.
My bottom line is will their military act on Mr. No More Wars orders. If they do we can't beat them
"For this purpose, we are establishing the External Revenue Service to collect all tariffs, duties and revenues. It will be massive amounts of money pouring into our treasury coming from foreign sources."
This sounds like he expects Canadians/Canada to pay the tariffs. Is there a word for tariffs that are paid by the exporter? Is it called, the-exporters-raise-their-prices-by-the-cost-of-the-tariff or ... ? I get that this sounds silly but, I wonder if there's a huge disconnect between what he expects to happen and what the GoC expects to happen.
There's some lapses in his logic, and that always comes back to "what is the real reason for this?"
If it's trying to provide room for American companies to raise prices, Canadian goods will be more expensive and it will allow them to do that. If it's trying to provide incentive for manufacturers to come back to America, it sort of does that, but they won't be able to get there the day after tariffs come in. If it's just trying to put economic pressure on us, it will work.
Problem is, we don't know what he's actually aiming for.
That’s true, and while it may give us some hope, I’m also looking at how uneventful his first presidency was. Trump has spent his entire adult life putting his name on everything. He has been trying to build a legacy, for himself and for his name. He failed to do that with the first chance, and Covid, combined with not having a team in place, likely played a role. This is his last chance (maybe) and what better way to solidify his place in the history books than expanding US territory? He didn’t have the ability to make Mexico pay for the wall. He does have the ability to apply economic pressure on Canada.
I like to remind myself about this on a regular basis so, thank you for bringing it up. And I'm not being facetious; I truly find his inability to deliver on his largest promise in previous years quite encouraging.
A good reminder that the country creating this situation and the leader doing it are the USA and Donald Trump respectively. I know I myself have lost sight of that sometimes, and it seems that often we have started fighting each other as opposed to continuing to identify the source of the problem. I am sure that this side effect of our internal turmoil is also a feature, not a bug of the intended policy. I would imagine that some level of uncertainty will exist far past February 1 as well.
Someone needs to remind Ms Smith of Rule #1 of international relations:
Nations do not have friends. They have interests.
Canada has enjoyed a "friendly" relationship with the USA for decades because, in part, they have deemed it to be in their interest. That has clearly changed, but our Premier has yet to get, or to read, the memo. Donald Trump only cares about what makes him look good, and her amateurish, ideologically-blinded imitation of Neville Chamberlain (or, worse, the Duke of Windsor), is only serving to badly undermine Canada's interest, giving Trump both a wedge and a hammer to use against us.
I won't use the word "treason" lightly, because I don't want to undermine its power, but her behaviour certainly amounts to depraved treachery.
Your reminder that the premier of Alberta is named Marlaina Smith and should be exclusively refered to be that name as per her provinces rules and regulations.

Many thanks David :)

Well said, as always.
Question for you, though:

He's the same guy who insisted there would be a wall, and that Mexico would pay for it. Neither of those things happened.

Dammit, Deirdre.
I was hoping you wouldn’t see that!

Define fairly. Dealing for mutual benefit, or fleecing for every last nickle.

Off topic, trump's psychologist niece has said that underneath all his bravado is self loathing hence the over compensation.
Perhaps in the end his unconscious goal is to make the US a pariah, much like Russia.
Even so, it will come at a high cost to all the decent people.

She's a dumb patsy.
