Great article Deirdre - permit me to add one more nugget of info about the NEP - it would have established a floor price for oil and gas in Canada.
Imagine that - domestic producers and provincial treasuries would get a market-related price for a commodity to shield them from world pricing shenanigans driving the commodity into the toilet (like the 2010 price fixing orchestrated by the Saudis and the rest of the Cartel).
Wow. Price stability.
Hmmmm - been waiting for the penny to drop on that one from the Wildrose/UCP zerglings for decades.
Thanks, Lee -- Prasad Panda put forward a private member's bill that sounded a lot like an NEP -- but you know, Alberta seeing itself as the National part -- in the fall of 2015 or 2016. I think I've tried to find it before but couldn't.
What does it mean that Smith is fully loaded, her and her ministers going full court press and vowing to do whatever it takes to stop the federal government's (and all other province's) plan to stand up for Canada, while at the same time, she is in full capitulatuon or acquiesence mode when it comes to dealing with the actual external threat from Trump?
I’m afraid it means that Smith is willing to sell out the country, and the province, for Donald Trump. She has no ties to the future of either — she bought a retirement deal in Panama.
Wait… I wonder if Smith and Trump don’t have something a little extra going on. He’s going to get Panama for her, maybe? Appointed her the Governor of the 59th state (or wherever it ends up falling in the order of things).
Wild rose was a party birthed by O&G cause Stelmach had the audacity to want a royalty review. Through a back door coup they are in power now. No royalties and nothing for Albertans. Where can we apply for a refund?
Really good article. Make no mistake. Danielle Smith wants Alberta to separate from the rest of Canada whether she does it using her sovereignty act and a referendum or having Alberta annexed as a 51st state. Either way she's assured of the power she hungers for as the leader of a sovereign nation separate from Canada, or a governor of a state at least for the time being but she would be credited forever with pulling it off.
This is what about 18% of Albertans want according to polls I've seen and groups of separatists I've been following. So she will avoid a referendum because she would not win it. I think she's going about the grab for power a different way now, through standing shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Kevin O'Leary who probably appeals to Trump, Jordan Peterson, Musk, the richest man in America and of course Donald Trump himself.
She is enjoying this, believing she's on the same level with the likes of the O'Leary, Peterson, Musk, JFK Jr., and Trump. What a foolish little radio broadcaster cum premier she is.
UCP … Unlimited Con Party. MAGA in all aspects, except the name. And Smith, arguably the worst, most easily manipulated, least qualified person to “serve” Alberta’s residents as our “leader”, thinks kissing Trump’s reportedly smelly ass, alienating herself from her provincial and territorial equals, tries to assure us that bending over and submitting to the rapist bully will ultimately reap dividends for our province? What a disgusting waste of human space Smith has become.
Agree with everything you’ve said. I do believe she is desperate to be one of them. I’ve thought this way of her since, I believe wild rose or whatever that was called.
I'm assuming you've seen the post that "Danielle Smith" and "treason" are two of the most searched terms in Canada right now? It's so bloody frustrating that she'll likely never be punished for her actions...

I think we needed to be following Imperial’s exit to get that..
On the plus side, congratulations on becoming a grand-mere! Somedays you have to look at the positives in your life to slog thru the rest of the bs.
Many thanks and yes — exactly that!

Oh dear. Sucking up. Sycophants.
Call her bluff. The Feds can hang Riel, force conscription on Canadiens and chop off Labrador but oh no don't mess with Alberta.
Call an Indepence Referendum or STFU.
Canada has our own Marjorie Taylor Green.
