Deirdre, this is both astute and necessary commentary. I’m glad you also indict Kenney for having stoked fringe opinions, especially now that he’s backing away from his purported “lunatics.”

Nice work Deirdre, as I was reading on this absurdity, we also have to keep in mind that she has to cover up with a lot of noise the big mess going on with the Turkish Tylenol gate.

Here's what scares me.

This could be turned into a winning referendum issue, Brexit is a great example.

It's time for conservatives in the leg, in business and the community to speak out.

Remember one thing about Brexit, then Bank of England Govenor Mark Carney advised against Brexit. I think this Priminister will bring with him the expiernce needed to take care of

There is NO legal, simple way for alberta to secede. And as First Nations have already said almost every square inch of Albertan land is Treaty land. And those treaties are far older than the province of Alberta is and they are with the federal government not the Alberta government. Plus it would take a Constitutional change needing 7 of the provinces who represent at least 50% of the entire Canadian population to agree to secession. Alberta does not get to make a unilateral decision.

Very insightful analysis.

There are still a number of questionable issues with this separation story. Smith works for the O&G industry without doubt - not the citizens of AB. Yet, most O&G companies she supports are US based. Noticeably, O&G are not investing in new/more extraction but instead shareholder payback. Unless AB citizens are all shareholders, where is the value? Instead, citizens are blessed with oil/gas extraction clean-up and pollution. As OPEX controls the market (seemingly) O&G pricing is dropping drastically impacting the Smith budget and therefore AB citizens. But, this is budget stuff so don't bother the 'Premier' about that. Meanwhile, she's privatizing healthcare with provincial budget until, of course, the deficit she's running will mean cuts to healthcare so individuals will then own the costs - just like the US. Let's not even get into the shady deals concerning AHS, Tylenol etc - as this is yet to be revealed.

Being generous, her knowledge of governance is extremely limited (Libertarian -10) but generating attention +100. Something about narcissists - it's all about them - not the citizens they pretend to represent. How in hell do these people get elected?? Citizens need to get more involved with the governance shaping their present & futures.

This separation ruse is so lacking in knowledge and process and impacts that it lands like just another 'look-at-me' or 'look over there' attention getting exercise to avoid the real issues citizens need to be focussed on. Good grief!

She seems to have completely forgotten her post from September 2024 in which she wrote: “The federal government does not have a mandate to bargain with Quebec separatists at the expense of Alberta, the West and the rest of the country. If the Liberals go down this path we need an election to be called immediately.”

The hypocrisy is yet another failure of leadership.

A warning for Smith from a 75 year old born-here Albertan—separation will not be a peaceful action decided by a vote. No one is taking away my Canadian citizenship!
