Deirdre, while reading your narrative, so many thoughts went through my mind! At first, it felt like a fairytale, a nice story with maybe a moral realized at the end. I could even hear someone reading the words, it was awesome, until I remembered it isn't a fairytale, it is a reality.

When I read the "joke" trump pondered, I wondered if it was like his joke about grabbing pussies. I found nothing funny in either. As Canadians, we should be disgusted. Our Canada is nothing like the U.S., except I fear Polievre is taking her there. Potential Prime Ministers do not hang around white supremacists. They just don't, at least they didn't openly support racist groups, to the best of my knowledge, before. I'm smart enough to know that I can be wrong.

I have felt for a very long time that Polievre was a trump wannabe, while retaining his job as Harper's chihuahua, of course.

The last thing I felt was that I was reading a terrifying, "How Canada became the US". I thought of the Soviet Union and how Putin wants it to be like before, while adding in even more territory. Do we really think orangeface will be satisfied ruling over the US? Will he take our country to war, and is that thought as far-fetched as I hope it is. Please tell me it is, so I can sleep tonight.

Between this post and the next (a week later) about it, I noticed more people commenting on the topic with similar wariness. With people like Smith and Poilievre brushing it off as “a joke”, I wanted to find a way to bring some recognition to the fact that it was undermining our PMO to their detriment. So long as they thought it hurt Trudeau, none of them were taking it seriously. I’ll give Poilievre some credit for his year-end interview where he was unequivocal about it not happening. Someone in federal leadership desperately needed to address it.

Trudeau addressed it as well, to be fair.

He did, just not before I’d posted this.

He can only survive as long as the crazy Facebook wing of the CPC supports him and they tend to drop politicians pretty quickly when they’re not exciting enough

Poilievre is not Trudeau. That’s it. That’s his only selling point. It’s enough to become PM at this moment. But that’s all he is. Just try to find any actual policy beyond that.

Every single last thing Trudeau has done is destructive and idiotic, so not being Trudeau is not only all PP needs to win, but it’s also all he needs to be guaranteed to be a massive improvement. It’s as if Justin set out to intentionally destroy the country, so I’d elect a ham sandwich to run the country as long as it isn’t Trudeau.

Then scribble "ham sandwich" on your ballot, put a box beside it and your mark in that box if that's how you feel. It would be a far less harmful vote than voting for a man who is power hungry, hasn't got one policy except to run down the previous prime minister with whatever means he can so he can achieve his lifetime dream. Poilievre does not care about you or anyone else but himself. You simply cannot honestly or truthfully say that about Justin Trudeau.

I think you can. Look how long it took for him to step down with so many calling for it months before. He has ruined the party.

… and then Mark Carney entered the conversation. He is also very much NOT Trudeau, with a level of intelligence PP couldn’t ever hope to have, and best of all, still holds Liberal values.

I would say that while Trump is PP’s biggest nightmare, he is, ironically, Carney’s (and Canada’s) best friend. For now, of course.

Pierre Poilievre is a whiner and a wiener as my grandson would say. He is an empty barrel . He is uncivilized . I would pick Trudeau any day over PP as he was not mean , a whiner and didn’t set out to hurt people. He even gave Alberta the pipeline to Burnaby Mountain. Did Albertans ever say thank you , no they just kept whining. In fact I think BC should turn of that tap.

Empty, fact free name calling. You people really do “think” with your feelings.

All your accusations about Poilievre would require you to be able to read his mind, which I hate to break it to you, you cannot do. These hyperbolic assumptions about how he’s so diabolically motivated purely out of personal ambition are utterly unfounded. I have news for you, any national politician is a highly ambitious and motivated individual, you don’t just randomly fall into a federal seat. If we’re looking at tangible results, Justin has ruined the country, while Pierre was a member of a government that left a budget surplus when they exited office with a country in far, far better shape than it is now.

It’s funny that you’re saying “all he wants to do is run down the prime minister!” So? Trudeau DESERVES to be “run down” for the outrageously incompetent, authoritarian way he’s run the country. That sort of criticism always belies an immature, emotional way of looking at the world that’s one of the main drivers of Canada’s decline. Thinking with your feelings. “Oh no! Pierre is a big meany! 😭 he’s being so mean to Justin, who always says such nice things!” Grow up.

IMO, you are wrong on this policy front. Listen to any actual interview, look at the CPC website, there’s plenty there.

He’s still the opposition leader, why should he school the liberals

“When Trump’s “joke” could be used to insult Trudeau the person, it worked perfectly with Poilievre’s campaign against the Liberal leader” BC’s Charlie Angus has been saying the same thing. He’s been interviewed by several US podcasters, but strangely enough I haven’t seen him on Canadian media at all. I like Charlie. He would agree with this excellent article.

PP is the Leader of the Official Opposition. He may become the next Prime Minister of Canada, should the Federal Conservatives either win a majority, or cobble together and lead a Minority Government. What is unclear to me is whether PP has the right stuff to become a Prime Minister. Or will he funk it and meet his established low as a Harper-era attack chihuahua, or worse with Ancient Orange v2 - decompose to the fawning leader of the Canadian MAGA Vichy Quislings?

He isn't made of the right stuff to be Prime Minister. I have always thought of him as Harper's chihuahua, but who am I? Nobody.

I don’t think we can consider anything that trump does is demeaning. He is a despicable, pathetic, deranged sociopath. Who could have any respect for any of his judgments, proclamations or insults. He is a disgusting human being

With far too many people willing to follow him, even here. The court of public opinion can change with enough saturation.

PP's video in reaction to Trudeau stepping down was downright shameful - it could have been written by Trump himself (well, cleaned up - Trump can't write a complete sentence in proper English). How disgusting is it to turn an event like this into a political ad vying for your vote. I will never vote for PP.

Trump is stacking the deck so that, in America anyway, people will be grateful if he only rips them off. Because he might get them killed. Of course he doesn't care how many lives he destroys and ripping people off does get them killed, just more discreetly. His power has always depended on that carelessness or indifference so he fit with a Republican Party that was evolving there. They converged and melded into a dark star, bent on absorption and blind growth until the global petri dish is exhausted and it crashes and Jesus rides in on a cloud if you're an evangelical. Great country, the USA. I hope Canada doesn't underestimate the power of crazed conservatives. They can't control their own shit. They breed dark beasts that break out and stalk everybody.
