We must have a televised public inquiry lead by an Appeal Court Justice with a mandate to deal with all aspects of AHS procurement issues, the Turkish Tylenol scam, the political corruption interference allegations from Ministers, staff both policial and administrative.

That is how we get to the whole truth, no subterfuge, propaganda, and spin.

I would be interested to see how much money the principals of this charter surgical group have historically donated to the UCP. Again, not illegal, but interesting. They tend to go well out of their way to benefit their own.

Just saw another conversation about this and how Athana was chosen for the role because she is so blue conservative. Unfortunately for the UCP, she's fiscal hawk conservative, not "government owes me!" conservative.

Seems like she might also be "rule of law" conservative. Which would explain so much RN.

YUP. People like her are the reason I still believe in decent conservatives.

Happy Thursday to you too, Deirdre. A story that puts a smile on my face. The sense of entitlement and the complete obliviousness to ethical standards is no surprise. Especially when one sees how blind the UCP is to so many issues. I hope their careers die a slow and agonizing death. Well done! I love your quiet dismissive tone and demure sarcasm!😆

Many thanks, David! When I thought of that last night I almost couldn't wait to get up and write it :)

If Smith is relying on "plausible deniability" it seems the word "plausible" is going to have work very hard...

I'd be interested in a straight-forward timeline of events, showing when which players resigned / retired, which executive functions were removed, and warnings were given. I don't have all the pertinent info (and may have missed such timeline already published?).

lol right? I put one in the last newsletter… brb

I guess we'll all learn more about the period between Athana's appointment December 2023 and fired January 2025 in due course...

That’s all in her statement of claim. Basically, outside of people on the internet making some connections, it was pretty quiet last year.

So Marshall's leaving position not likely connected?

Someone told me that he had basically said he was out as of the end of the year, so I'm not positive if it was the date originally or if he left for another job or what. He called it a "retirement" but who knows?

I hate to be a wet blanket here, and hopefully I am wrong. But. I think for the most part, people have become so numb/used to scandal that even if this investigation proceeds, it will largely go unnoticed. I am not saying that this is right. I think everyone should pay attention to this kind of thing - corruption, especially in government, is never a good thing, obviously. But think of all the scandals that have occurred and have largely been forgotten at election time. In addition, people are paying attention to other political topics - looking south of the border (oh, the irony as such a huge part of that governments problem is corruption), tariff wars, the federal Liberal leadership race, etc. I seriously think that the only thing that will catch people's attention is if Smith and some of her cohorts are dragged off in handcuffs. And somehow, I don't think this is going to happen. Again, I hope I am wrong, I have certainly been wrong before!

The really weird thing here is that it wasn’t even a UCP thing until the hockey games. And after that, political appointees, sure, but it didn’t even involve a Minister until LaGrange. And it was only LaGrange… until the coverup. Now it’s more of them.

willing to go down together than I could have imagined possible in politics. But this is also a bigger scandal. It’s $600 million.. It’s paying inflated contracts for friends of the govt. it’s not a little thing.

In all their attempts to reframe and refocus (ok, gaslight) our attention, what's notable is that not a single person, in a position to know, has actually denied the most damning allegations.

I’m not surprised they’re circling the wagons. They’re all so involved that they’re either going to sink or swim as a group

Also, it’s turns out that Sam Mraiche and MHCare have been throwing money at Dale McFee too. Literally the entire UCP and all the usual suspects associated with them have their hands in this cookie jar

Of course they circle the wagons. It's the only direction the UCP has ever followed. One can hope that, if they circle long enough, they’ll go down the drain where the rest of the sludge lives.

If Premier Smith didn't know as she alleges, that's even worse than she knew and did nothing about it or encourage the contracts.

Did no one see this coming with Smith taking power? I’m nobody but it was clear to me how she would bring corruption into Alberta’s politics. Mindless voters are dangerous

Expand full comment

It wasn’t clear to me because she’s so unpredictable. Who were we going to get as premier? Danielle Smith: effective opposition leader who railed against corruption and cronyism? Or, Danielle Smith: conspiracy theorist whose alternate reality is unknowable to anyone with an ounce of sense?

This goes a LOT deeper than a few hockey tickets. This is looking Panamanian, numbered bank account in depth!

Nothing less than an RCMP (maybe even out of province RCMP) investigation is needed.
