Thanks Deirdre, as always, well stated. My relationshhip with the USA is suspended at least until 2025. In one play orange julius has destroyed the trust of an ally and a friend. When he's gone we can talk about being friends again. He's a toxic POS
Gravitas— the presidency does that for most. They develop a sense of responsibility very quickly because offhand remarks can cause problems. As the most powerful person of the most powerful nation, they know that not only are Americans counting on them, but the world is counting on them. Their word means something.
This guy is still in the mode of stiffing contractors so he can win. With his lack of integrity, his need to win, and his general narcissism, changing course is a challenge.
Here, while he basically has a flock of enablers in the Republican Party, reality arrived in the markets… he loves his rising markets. And it probably doesn’t hurt when the WSJ used the word, “dumbest.”
I went searching for a video where the owner of WSJ was in the Oval Office when a reporter asked about that article and couldn’t find it. His ego cannot take the losses his country could suffer because of this. I’m doing a panel on 770 tomorrow at 3pm MDT — I have thoughts 😏
My intent was to listen in to 770… it sometimes comes in reasonably clearly 325 km away, although I feel like my ancestors crowding around a radio in the 1930s. Alas, life got in the way of my listening in on the dialogue. Hope it went well. I’m grateful for your voice in this crazy Alberta dialogue where one is often left wondering,”was that real or just more culture wars gas lighting?”
All good. I went to your podcast link and was enjoying listening to the owner of the micro brewery in Okotoks describe the challenges of their entrepreneurship and the barriers within Canada to get their product in front of consumers in Victoria or Oakville. It fits personal interests:
1. I love this level of capitalism. This is the best of our economic system vs the financial markets where what we buy is filtered through financial investments of buying and selling producers of goods and “mom and pop” like the microbrewery in Okotoks is bought out by Molson Coors.
2. I love a good craft beer. I don’t imbibe much, but my last beer a few weeks ago was from Ravenwolf, a micro brewery in Spruce Grove. I highly recommend their Sombrero Mexican Lager for its sharp clean taste. 😎
It seems that many western countries are beginning to see the US relationship in a much different light & trust is seriously eroded. I just hope our own governments can pivot expeditiously to insulate ourselves as much as possible. I think the backlash of ‘Buy Canadian’ & ‘Bye USA’ is helping to send a msg and provide proof of the benefits to being ‘good neighbours’ particularly if its affecting Florida & border cities tourism & shopping. Our own domestic trade barriers have impacted productivity and commerce for far too long. Hopefully we can finally ‘clean up
our house’ so to speak. It will depend on how resilient, patriotic and committed Canadians are prepared to be, rather than adopting a defeatist posture in trying to resolve our ‘made in Canada’ problems. I’m waiting for Canadian rallies to build with the ‘Canada is not for Sale’ sentiment. Hopefully the momentum will drive us forward 🙏
Thank you for this. So well spoken. I’ve been seeing the many posts of everyone saying “he blinked” “Canada and Mexico pants him” and so on. It was a huge relief when he paused it. But as you say, it’s still only paused. I would prefer it if people would shut up about the win. With someone so unstable too many negative headlines could cause a new backlash.
I’m not sure as a nation we can come back from this and trust the US again. Each new leader could rip up the previous one’s contracts and trade agreements. Nothing seems to be off the table for this insufferable man. When this is over, and I do hope the citizens of the US prevail against him, it will be a very long time before the relationship between the two countries normalizes. I am encouraged by trade talk opening back up with other countries and a push for lessening the provincial boarder restrictions. I feel we are taking the right path forward let’s hope we have a favorable outcome in the end.
Hearing of the things that Trump is doing down there makes me somewhat optimistic that their attention will soon be very much turned inward and that might buy us a little more reprieve. But I agree — not sure how we ever them again.
Now that the entire Republican Party, the Billionaire class, social media platforms and regular media have all knelt down to him, he expects other world leaders to do the same.
Canada and Mexico are only the first to tell him politely to Eff Off !!
The WSJ had an article that members of his own cabinet and advisors recognizing the impending damage apparently tried to dissuade him from launching a trade war to no avail. Is there really no one in the administration that is able/willing to get through to him?
The short answer is no. They can if they band together, but they won't (you need a spine for that). It will be up to the voters in the midterms to remove some of his enablers. The question is how will it even be possible to reverse the damage?

Thanks David.
I think it's forever changed the way we'll look at the U.S., especially if you can't even take his own signature on a trade agreement for anything.

Thanks Barry :) Thought I had a clip but it wasn’t ours! I’ll keep an eye on it and see if they put one up.

“Trust them again”…

He’s not a smart person but is the smartest person in any room, so, it’s not easy, I’m sure. At least he can swayed by markets, I guess?

Mindless! 2029!
Nice piece Deirdre! Together for Canada.
